REGISTERED ANTIQUITY – NON-EXPORTABLE ITEM.
This silver teapot was produced in the 19th century, Kutch, colonial India. Repoussé and chasing techniques were used to shape this teapot. This teapot was possibly part of a larger set including a milk jug and a sugar cup. Similar teapots can be found in In Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and at the Kutch Museum in Bhuj, Gujarat. Delight in design: Indian silver for the Raj by Vidya Daheja refers to a very similar silver tea service set produced in Kutch. Although this particular piece is unmarked, many of them were marked with the name of the craftsman and the patron.
Kutch became a significant silverware production centre with master craftsmen like Oomersee Mawjee & Raghavji Mawjee. The craft of silverware and its trade particularly flourished during the reign of Mirza Raja Sawai Khengarji Bahadur. This teapot displays that historic excellence in its design and appearance. The chased black low oxidised areas and shining silvery highlights create a contrast, making the silver teapot look further lustrous.
Kutch silver is known for its hybrid of local decorative style with European form & gained significant popularity during the Victorian Era when it was imitated by prominent English Silversmiths, including Elkington & Co.
