REGISTERED ANTIQUITY – NON-EXPORTABLE ITEM.
The John Thomas London mantel clock, produced in collaboration with the Dutch manufacturer Wuba Warmink is especially reminiscent of mid-century preferences for elegance moderated with modern efficiency. Auction listings consistently highlight the quality of its materials: walnut case with deep patina, gilt brass handle and finials, silvered chapter ring in Roman numerals, and the moonphase disc in vibrant color, all serving to create a decorative but functional object of much beauty.
The appearance is partly due to this pleasant balance—neither showy nor plain, the clock takes an aesthetic middle road, suitable for display on a mantelpiece yet sufficiently subdued for mid-century interior domesticity. The moonphase complication in general, ornamental and utilitarian, harks back to eighteenth- and nineteenth century longcase clocks, evoking a sense of historical continuity even in a compact twentieth-century package.
From a Private Collection in Mumbai, India.
Good Condition with minor wear.
