A KASHMIRI PAPIER-MÂCHÉ VASE, Possibly Srinagar, Kashmir, Northern India, ca. 1870 – 1890.

Object Detail

 

Papier mache, derived from the French term “papier mâché,” translates literally to “chewed or mashed paper.” Kashmir is recognised as the primary centre for this craft, which has Persian origins.  In the 14th century, the notable Muslim saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani introduced the art of papier mache to the Kashmiri people.

 

The vase features a stunning baluster-like shape, gracefully resting atop a flat, circular base that is beautifully painted in a deep, rich blue. Its body is a vibrant canvas of polychromatic hues intermingled with delicate gold accents. The exterior of the vase is meticulously decorated with eight distinct panels, each alternatingly depicting spotted Demonic figures alongside Righteous Human Rulers.  The demonic rulers are often shown accompanied by a variety of companions, including fellow demons and formidable wild animals such as serpents, bears, and tigers.

 

In contrast, the Human Rulers are depicted in opulent settings, being pampered and entertained by a host of attendants as well as ethereal, winged angels. The overall composition is meticulously set against a dense floral backdrop, rich with details that add depth and texture. This intricate artwork conveys a captivating allegory that explores the dichotomy of Evil and Good, engaging viewers with its vibrant storytelling and complex symbolism. The handles are embellished with a lavish gilt finish and meticulously painted in an array of colours, showcasing an elaborate floral meander pattern that adds to the overall opulence of the piece.
